Washing machine

Washing machine leaking? 4 likely causes

Leaks are usually traced to the door seal, detergent drawer, hoses or the pump — find where it appears from, as that narrows the cause quickly.

Symptom: Water on the floor around the machine · Typical cost: £60–£160 depending on the part.

Always switch off and unplug the appliance before inspecting it. Never work on gas appliances or fixed electrical wiring yourself — call a Gas Safe registered engineer or a qualified electrician.

Likely causes, most common first

  1. 1

    Split or dirty door seal

    DIY: moderate

Tears or a trapped sock or hair grip let water escape from the front.

The fix:Clean the seal, check for tears, replace if damaged.

  2. 2

    Loose or cracked hoses

    DIY: easy

Inlet/outlet hoses and clamps loosen over time.

The fix:Tighten clamps, replace perished hoses or washers.

  3. 3

    Leaking pump or filter cap

    DIY: moderate

A filter not screwed back fully or a cracked pump housing leaks at the bottom front.

The fix:Refit filter cap tightly and replace the pump if cracked.

  4. 4

    Overfilling detergent drawer

    DIY: easy

Too much detergent or a blocked drawer overflows at the front.

The fix:Clean the drawer and use the right dose.
