Oven repair

Electric ovens are simple machines — elements, a thermostat, a fan and a timer or control board — so most faults are cheap to fix. Gas ovens add a thermocouple and ignition system. Door seals, fans and thermostats are the common wear items.

Repair or replace?

Ovens are among the most repairable appliances. Replace element, fan, thermostat, door seal or hinge faults rather than the oven. Consider replacement when a built-in oven needs a new control board or touchscreen on a model over 10 years old.

Know your rights. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, appliances must be of satisfactory quality and last a reasonable time. If a fault appears within 6 months of purchase the retailer must prove it wasn’t there at delivery, and you can usually claim for up to 6 years (5 years in Scotland) if a product fails far sooner than it should. Check this before paying for a repair on a young machine.

Frequently asked questions

How much does oven repair cost in the UK?

Most oven repairs cost £80–£200 including parts and labour. A replacement typically costs £350–£1,500, so repair is usually worth it unless the machine is old and the fault is major.

How long should a oven last?

A typical oven lasts 10–15 years. Regular cleaning and descaling in hard-water areas helps it reach the top of that range.
