Microwaves contain a high-voltage circuit that stays dangerous even when unplugged. Most faults are door switches, turntable motors and fuses — but magnetron and high-voltage diode faults must only be handled by a professional.

Repair or replace?

On a cheap countertop microwave, replacement is often cheaper than any repair. On built-in and combination microwaves, repairing is usually better value.

Know your rights. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, appliances must be of satisfactory quality and last a reasonable time. If a fault appears within 6 months of purchase the retailer must prove it wasn’t there at delivery, and you can usually claim for up to 6 years (5 years in Scotland) if a product fails far sooner than it should. Check this before paying for a repair on a young machine.
