How to clean an oven safely

Burnt-on grease reduces efficiency and can smoke or catch fire. Regular cleaning prevents faults with fans and elements.

1–2 hoursEasy

What you'll need

  • Oven cleaner or bicarbonate of soda
  • Gloves
  • Non-scratch sponge

Step by step

  1. 1

Remove shelves and trays and soak them in hot soapy water.

  2. 2

Apply the cleaner to the cool oven interior, avoiding the element and fan.

  3. 3

Leave for the time on the instructions (or overnight with a bicarbonate paste).

  4. 4

Wipe off with a damp cloth.

  5. 5

Run the oven empty for 10 minutes to burn off residue.

Tips

  • Don’t spray cleaner on elements, fans or the door seal.
